Kelce made his debut as Ed Lachlan in ‘Grotesquerie’ on Oct. 3, and fans feel like one of his scenes included an ode to his popstar girlfriend
Travis Kelce just made his debut as a potential love interest for Niecy Nash-Betts’ character in Grotesquerie, and fans think one of his first scenes may have included an ode to his pop star girlfriend.
Kelce was introduced as Ed Lachlan — a recovering drug addict working as a nurse — in episode 3 of the FX series on Oct. 2. He met Nash-Betts’ character Detective Lois Tryon at the hospital where her husband Marshall (Courtney B. Vance) is in a coma, and the pair flirted before Lois took off in her car from the hospital — despite the alcohol she’d consumed.
Nash-Betts’ character ended up crashing her car, landing her back in the hospital with Ed as her nurse, and the episode ended with the pair breaking out of the hospital hand-in-hand and escaping in Ed’s red convertible.
The whole sequence was very romantic — and fans couldn’t help but see it as a potential nod to a Taylor Swift song.
As Ed and Lois escaped in his car, their very own getaway car, fans took to social media to reflect on whether the scene was intended as a reference to Swift’s song, “Getaway Car,” from 2017’s Reputation.
A fan page for the Kansas City Chiefs tight end posted a clip of the scene on X (formerly Twitter), and several of the replies pointed out that Kelce was having his very own onscreen getaway car moment.
Another fan pointed out the possible connection on TikTok, writing over a clip from the episode, “Does this look familiar Swifties?! 😍😍.”
“This can’t be a coincidence!” the fan wrote in the post’s caption.
The reference is extra cute considering it comes one year after the couple debuted their relationship as Swift, 34, attended her first Chiefs game on Sept. 24, 2023, and the pair ended the night riding off in one of Kelce’s convertibles.
Days later on his podcast, New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce, Travis teased fans even further as he said of the night, “And then we just slid off in the getaway car at the end.”
“Took my Chevelle to the game, shout out to Taylor for coming through and seeing me rock the stage,” Travis said.
They repeated the sweet move again this past September, as Swift was seen with her arm wrapped around Kelce as they exited Arrowhead Stadium on a golf cart after the Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5.
New episodes of Grotesquerie air Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX and stream the next day on Hulu.
