‘The Idea of You’ author Robinne Lee reacts to movie’s contrasting ending

he Idea of You author Robinne Lee laid bare her thoughts regarding the stark ending of the movie compared to the novel she penned.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the author revealed that her husband was a producer on the film adaptation but she directly “was not involved in the adaptation.”

She shared that although her husband told her that there were some changes made in story for the movie, she didn’t anticipate nor necessarily agree with the ending it received.

“The book is a book, and the movie is a movie,” acknowledging that both realms have different dynamic Lee went on to explain, “You have to step away and let the filmmakers do what they’re going to do and not get too concerned with what it is you’ve created and when it stops because it’s a completely different medium.”

Despite not intending to give Solene and Hayes a happy ending, she recognized, “It’s America — Hollywood’s going to do what they’re going to do, and they’re going to throw a happy ending on everything.”

“But that’s not the story I wanted to tell,” she put her point on the table, “Maybe American viewers are not ready for [a sad ending].”

Spoiler Alert! For the unversed, In the popular book, Solene and Hayes’ love story remained unrequited, but in the movie adaptation, portrayed by Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, their love story was rekindled five years after parting ways for good.
