See Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, Jessica Chastain, Brooke Shields and More at the Starry Opening of Broadway’s Sunset Blvd.

It was a starry night on Broadway as the celebrities stepped out in New York City for the opening of Sunset Boulevard.

Director Jamie Lloyd’s bold revival of the classic musical — styled this time around as Sunset Blvd. — had its official kickoff at the St. James Theatre on Sunday. Oct. 20, with the show and its star Nicole Scherzinger earning rave reviews.

Adapted from Billy Wilder’s Oscar-winning 1950 film, the musical features songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics and libretto by Don Black and Christopher Hampton.

It follows faded silent movie star Norma Desmond (Scherzinger, in her Broadway debut), who longs for a return to the big screen and persuades young writer Joe Gillis (Tom Francis, also in his Broadway debut) to help her do so despite Hollywood deeming her too old for the industry.

The production first opened in London’s West End in September 2023. It went on to win seven 2024 Olivier Awards (England’s version of the Tony Awards) including trophies for Scherzinger, Francis and Lloyd. David Thaxton and Grace Hodgett-Young were also nominated for their performances in the musical, and transfer with Scherzinger and Francis for the N.Y.C. production.
