Netflix releases sequel of fan favourite with bigger budget, ambitions

The last release of the sci-fi was four years earlier

Fans of the crowd-funded sci-fi hit Code 8 finally got their fix this week as Netflix released the long-awaited sequel, Code 8: Part II. The film, arriving four years after the original’s success, boasts a significantly larger budget and even loftier ambitions.

The first Code 8 captured audiences with its gritty portrayal of a world where people with superpowers, known as PWPs, face discrimination and oppression. The sequel promises to expand on this universe, delving deeper into the social and political struggles of PWPs.

Director Jeff Chan spoke about the evolution of the project: “With ‘Code 8: Part II,’ we have the resources to truly showcase the potential of this world we built. We’ve got bigger action sequences, a more expansive story, and the chance to explore the themes of social justice in a more nuanced way.”

Robbie Amell and Stephen Amell reprise their roles as Connor and Garrett, two brothers on opposite sides of the law but bound by their status as PWPs. Early reactions suggest the sequel retains the heart of the original film – the intense parkour action sequences and the strong bond between the brothers – while upping the ante in terms of scale and social commentary.

The wait for Code 8: Part II has certainly been long, but with its increased budget and focus on social justice themes, it seems the sequel is primed to deliver a powerful and action-packed experience for fans and newcomers alike
