Meghan Markle Is Returning to Television

Meghan Markle is heading back to the small screen.

Representatives for the Duchess of Sussex confirmed to Vogue that she has a new show with Netflix currently in production. While still untitled, it “will celebrate the joys of cooking, gardening, entertaining, and friendship,” their office said in a statement. The news was first reported in Deadline.

It will be directed by Michael Steed, who previously worked on the Emmy-winning series Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.

The news comes a few weeks after the Duchess announced a new company, American Riviera Orchard. The goods and services listed on the patent application included tableware, cookbooks, textiles, as well as edible items like jellies, marmalades, and fruit preserves—suggesting that American Riviera Orchard and her Netflix show are all part of a broader effort by the duchess to build a lifestyle empire.

Prince Harry is also set to be a regular at Netflix HQ. Alongside his wife, he will be working on a non-fiction show for the streaming platform about the US Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida. “Known primarily for its aesthetic and social scene, the series will pull the curtain back on the grit and passion of the sport, capturing players and all it takes to compete at the highest level,” the statement read. The show-runner is Miloš Balać, best known for Welcome to Wrexham, an FX series following the Welsh football club Wrexham A.F.C.

While the details are still vague, if the description echoes a Drive to Survive-style docuseries, that’s likely no coincidence. The latter show, which spotlights F1 drivers and their drama throughout the racing season, has been a smash hit for Netflix and has converted millions of fans to the sport—and Meghan and Harry may be hoping to cultivate a similar enthusiasm around polo.

The two projects also confirm the former royal couple’s commitment to their multi-million, multi-year Netflix deal, which they inked in 2020. So far, only their tell-all docuseries, Harry & Meghan, has been a hit for the streaming platform, leading to criticism about their creative output. However, this announcement shows the Sussexes are ready to produce a new wave of notable content—one that doesn’t involve their relationship with the royal family.
