Prince Harry and Meghan Markle still have their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles – despite stepping down as senior working members of the Royal Family.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle being stripped of their royal titles would be “meaningless and mean spirited”, a commentator has claimed.
In a debate on Sky Australia, Sky News host James Macpherson claimed everyone in the Royal Family would be happier if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were to officially renounce their titles
He said: “They’ve done nothing but complain from the moment they were born into or married into the Royal Family.
“So make them happy. Get them out of there.”
Rebutting Macpherson’s point, royal commentator Angela Mollard argued taking away their royal titles would be “meaningless and mean-spirited”.
She said: “Their titles are already diminished in the court of public opinion. They’re doing it themselves.
“You don’t actually need to formally take them away from them because we don’t see them with that kind of regal monarchy attached life anymore anyway.”
Referring to Prince Harry’s self-written memoir, Spare, Mollard also said that he deserves sympathy for what has happened in his life.
She pointed out how at the core of it all, this was a 12-year-old boy who had to walk behind his mother’s coffin in public.
The royal commentator said: “He was paraded in public he was not allowed the privacy that any child should have.
One of the panel members voted that they should be kicked out, said: “At the end of the day, life is about choices. And I think they’ve made theirs quite clear.”
Meanwhile, a woman who voted that they should keep their titles said it should be considered that if the couple were to divorce, Prince Harry should be allowed to return to the royal family.
“I don’t see any harm in keeping their royal titles but I don’t think they’re worth much,” she added.
