Mark Consuelos On Why Kelly Ripa’s Parents Should’ve Allowed Her To Spend New Year’s With Him Before They Got Married:

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have “never been apart” on New Year’s Eve since they’ve been married — but the year before they tied the knot was a different story

On Live with Kelly and Mark on Tuesday, Consuelos recalled asking Ripa, who was 25 at the time, to travel to Italy with him to ring in the new year. However, her “parents wouldn’t allow [her] to do that.”

Ripa teased that “was so dumb,” acknowledging that she “was an adult,” but then chose to step into her parents’ shoes and asked Consuelos what they would do if their daughter Lola did the same thing.

“Lola is 23. If Lola told us she was going to Italy with a man we had not met, how would you react to that?” she asked.

Consuelos replied, “Yeah, but they’d met me, no?

Ripa said that her parents had not met him yet, to which Consuelos quipped that they “saw [him] on TV.”

“Mateo was, like, the nicest guy ever,” he added, referring to his role on All My Children.

Nonetheless, Ripa argued that “doesn’t mean anything” with respect to her parents, as she claimed they are “not show business people.” Consuelos then realized that he had finally met Ripa’s mother and father that spring, and that they got married “soon after that.”

“You still should have come to Italy,” he doubled down.

Ripa noted, “In hindsight, yes, it all worked out. But at the time, I don’t know. It seemed like you were somebody that was used to getting their way. And I was like, ‘Hmm.’”

She highlighted that there are guys who have “never heard no before,” and admitted that “part of [her] appeal to [Consuelos] was that [she] said no all the time.”

“I was like, ‘No.’ And he was like…, ‘What is this new word?’” she continued.

Consuelos said, “But you did say, in hindsight, you should’ve come.”

Ripa confirmed, to which Consuelos quipped, “That’s what I’m hearing.”

“See what I mean?” Ripa teased.
