The TV presenter opened up about her weight loss journey – and just why the results were such a shock to her
When she gave up drinking, she had no idea the body transformation she would go through. Now Kelly Ripa has opened up about the impact it would have on her weight.
Kelly was on Live with Kelly and Mark, with stand-in host Andy Cohen, who was covering for her husband Mark Consuelos. He mentioned he was doing dry January – and that triggered Kelly to recall what happened to her when she stopped.
She said on Wednesday’s episode of the show: “I told you when I quit drinking, I expected there to be this windfall of weight loss because everybody’s like, ‘Well, you are going to get too skinny, and you can’t afford to lose it,’ ”
Kelly, 54, said the opposite occurred. She said: “I gained 12 pounds [and said], ‘I don’t understand this magical weight loss that people apply.’ I think I just took to eating the sugar because apparently, alcohol is like a lot of sugar, which you don’t really realize when it goes in it tastes kind of bitter.”
Kelly has been a mainstay on the Live With… early morning show since making her debut in 2001.
Over two decades later, she still describes the role as a “dream come true” even though she has seen so many co-hosts come and go over the years.
In February 2023 it was announced she would be joined by Mark in the hot seat after Ryan Seacrest confirmed he was quitting the role after six seasons.
Prior to Mark and Ryan, Kelly had been paired with the likes of Regis Philbin and Michael
She was also joined by a stream of guest co-hosts such as Jerry Seinfeld, Neil Patrick Harris, Michael Bublé, Seth Meyers, Mary J. Blige and Cohen over the years.
But her latest co-host is a choice which was much closer to home – her husband to be precise. Kelly has been married to Mark for nearly 30 years. The pair eloped a year after they met while working on All My Children.
