The ‘Live With Kelly and Mark’ hosts joked about getting a ‘gray divorce.’
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have a long history of humorously airing out their marriage’s dirty laundry on the air, so it wasn’t a huge surprise when the talk show co-hosts shared a revealing anecdote about their relationship during a recent episode of Live With Kelly and Mark.
As Ripa explained it, a “fascinating” article on the topic of “gray divorce”—a term usually used for divorces between couples over the age of 50—led to a bit of a misunderstanding between the pair.
“I was reading this article, and I started talking to Mark about it, and Mark got very defensive,” Ripa said, adding that Consuelos asked her why she read the article in the first place.
“And I said, ‘Because I was in an airport for two hours and I, it just popped up on my newsfeed and I clicked on it. It was interesting to me,'” she admitted.
“Well you came home from the trip, and you’re like, I read this amazing article. I go, ‘Tell me about it,'” Consuelos interjected.
“I didn’t say ‘amazing,’ I said ‘fascinating,'” Ripa clarified. “Fascinating article.”
“You really have to hear it read to you,” she continued. “‘The astonishing rise of the gray divorce.’ And I was like, ‘Oh I want one!'”
Ripa joked that the narrator’s “soothing” voice made the idea seem appealing, but noted that she and her husband “still have a lot in common.”
Mark agreed that his wife would always take care of him and “change my diapers.”
“Of course I will,” she agreed. “I do it all the time.”
Former soap opera actors Ripa and Consuelos tied the knot in 1996 after meeting on the set of All My Children. Their characters also ended up getting married. They share three children, a son Michael, born in 1997, a daughter Lola, born in 2001, and another son, Joaquin, born in 2003.
