Bill Murray reflects on pep talk he gave to ‘SNL 50’ writers before the show

Bill Murray opens up about his special talk with ‘SNL 50’ writers during Drew Barrymore Show

Bill Murray has recently shared real reason behind his pep talk he had with the writers before the SNL 50th Anniversary Special.

On March 12, the Emmy award-winning actor appeared as a guest on The Drew Barrymore Show to promote his new movie Riff Raff, currently in theatres, and revealed why he gave pep talk at the first place.

Well, they were having a meeting and I just sort of walked into the meeting, you know. It’s [Lorne Michaels’] meeting, and he’s sitting there; his feet on his desk, and there were all the writers sitting in the room and it was grim. It was very grim,” recalled the 74-year-old.

Bill remarked, “It just felt very heavy.”

The Groundhog Day alum told the host that he’d already seen some of the SNL50 planning, which left him feeling “really excited”.

I just tried to share with them how beautiful it was going to be,” said the actor.

Bill further said, “What a wonderful responsibility it was going to be so many people were going to watch it and love it.”

“I thought it was destined to be extraordinary success and it was going to be great, and let’s open a window because it’s hot in here,” he recalled of his speech for the writers.

However, Bill mentioned, “Tina Fey really enjoyed that and I guess other writers, too.”

“It seemed like they just needed a little kick, a little boost,” remarked the actor.

Bill clarified that he “wasn’t acting” during his pep talk, “and they certainly delivered”.

Meanwhile, Drew added that they might need it in that moment as they felt “‘the weight of the world’ in pulling off a task so daunting”.
