‘Baby Reindeer’ prompts a positive impact following release

Based on Richard Gadd’s real life story ‘Baby Reindeer’ encourages sexual assault survivors to speak out

Richard Gadd’s Netflix show Baby Reindeer has gained significant attention since its release, inspiring many male sexual assault survivors to come forward, speak out, and seek help.

The dark comedy miniseries, which has become an instant smash hit, is based on Gadd’s own real-life experiences of being stalked, harassed, and sexually assaulted, portrayed through the fictional character Donny Dunn, aged 34.

Amidst the growing numbers shared over social media, the creator of Baby Reindeer took to his Instagram stories on Friday, May 3, to highlight the impact of the series via statistics from WE ARE SURVIVORS, an organisation that offers advice and support to men who are victims of sexual abuse.

In the first story, a poster from the series was featured alongside text stating, “Since the launch of Baby Reindeer, 40% of referrals to WE ARE SURVIVORS are from young people ages 26-35!”

The following slide featured another poster with the text, “In the first two weeks after its launch on Netflix, 53% of all referrals to WE ARE SURVIVORS told us Baby Reindeer was the main reason they reached out to us.”

Finally, the third story revealed, “Since the launch of BABY REINDEER on Netflix, we’ve seen an 80% increase in ‘first-time callers’ to WE ARE SURVIVORS inquiring about the support we offer male survivors.”

Additionally, Baby Reindeer has amassed over 22 million views since its release on Netflix on April,11.
