Chris Evans Confirmed to Return to MCU for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Mystery Role

Chris Evans is officially coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans are buzzing about his new role in the upcoming blockbuster ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set to welcome back Chris Evans, best known for his iconic role as Steve Rogers/Captain America. The actor will be part of the highly anticipated “Avengers: Doomsday,” alongside another veteran MCU star Robert Downey Jr., who intriguingly will appear as Doctor Doom.

The Wrap has learned exclusively that Evans’ exact role is yet to be defined, but his involvement is confirmed.

Evans’ return comes after he briefly graced the screen in this summer’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” not as Captain America but as his character Johnny Storm from Fox’s “Fantastic Four” movies. This crossover raised eyebrows and set the stage for his MCU comeback.

The Russo Brothers, who have a storied history with both Evans and Downey Jr., will direct “Avengers: Doomsday” and its sequel “Avengers: Secret Wars.” “Avengers: Doomsday” is slated for release on May 1, 2026.

The end of “Avengers: Endgame” left Steve Rogers’ fate ambiguous, with many hinting that the elderly hero has since died. However, the multiverse concept opens numerous possibilities, including a Captain America variant. As the trades report, “Evans will be involved in some capacity, but the extent and exact nature of his role is unknown.”

Robert Downey Jr.’s return further exemplifies Marvel’s willingness to explore alternate realities and timelines. Tom Holland is also expected to take a lead role as Spider-Man in these new installments. Despite the swirling rumors, Evans’ team has remained silent, and Marvel has not commented officially.

Anthony Mackie currently holds the mantle of Captain America in the MCU, with his next appearance set in “Captain America: Brave New World,” scheduled for February 14, 2025.

Evans first donned the shield in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” and has since had an illustrious run, including roles in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” and multiple “Avengers” films.

Evans’ return has been a subject of speculation and excitement among fans. Despite his strong reservations about reprising the role under anything less than ideal circumstances, Evans has said, “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very protective with it… It’s something that I am very proud of.”

The anticipation for “Avengers: Doomsday” continues to build, with fans eager to see how Evans will fit into the evolving MCU landscape. One thing is certain-his return is set to reignite the passion and excitement of Marvel’s massive fanbase.
