‘Good Will’ Created Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on ‘Live’ Set ‘Envy of Every Other Daytime Show’

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are doing brilliantly with their talk show, Live with Kelly and Mark, and entering 2025 on a major high as the most-watched syndicated talk show for almost two years straight. As a source exclusively tells Closer, a lot of their success comes from the foundation they’ve built of keeping things light and happy while avoiding negativity and heavy topics like the plague.

“It’s not some giant mystery: Kelly and Mark get along as coworkers because their marriage is so solid,” says a source who has known the couple professionally and personally for ages. “Any of the initial skepticism around bringing Mark into the cohost role alongside Kelly has pretty much evaporated, and despite all the eulogies you hear about broadcast television these days, Live is still a highly profitable enterprise and Kelly’s fans think of her and Mark as members of their extended family.”

The romance between Kelly, 54, and Mark, 53, began in the ‘90s when they met on the set of All My Children and has only grown stronger since. “I thought she was adorable, hot and sexy and all that stuff,” the Spanish actor said of meeting his future wife for the first time while filming the soap opera. “But I was very focused — I didn’t really think I had a chance with her, so I wasn’t really focused on that.”

As it happens, Kelly thought the same of Mark and the two started dating. After about a year, they eloped in May 1996 in Las Vegas. In June the following year, they welcomed their first son, Michael. Later in June 2001 they had daughter, Lola, and finally welcomed their third kid, son Joaquin, in February 2003.

“Who would we have married if not each other,” Kelly once said of her marriage to Mark.

Throughout the years, there’s been no shaking their relationship, which is among the most solid in Hollywood. Not only have they managed to stay happily married for nearly 30 years, but they’ve also kept the fire alive when on-screen with each other. The source notes, however, that isn’t the only reason people are tuning in in droves to watch the duo.

“Beyond their chemistry on the show, Kelly and Mark have terrific instincts and they have carefully steered the show away from upsetting and negative topics, which is a lot trickier to do than it sounds.”

In an era rife with appeals to our worst inclinations, injecting a little levity into people’s lives has become a contrarian, yet definitely welcomed, strategy for a successful show, and the couple carry that philosophy into the behind-the-scenes production, too.

“They also have a reputation for treating their staff well and not being overbearing bosses,” the friend adds, “but the good will they have created as a team, which feels a lot more authentic than any previous iteration of the show, has made them the envy of every other daytime show, especially the ones that are driven by bickering or endlessly chasing after viral moments.”
