The ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ alum shares about the challenges and guilt she faces as a single mother since her separation from Dean McDermott, including financial instability, emotional roller coasters and the impact on her children.
Tori Spelling has candidly discussed the difficulties of navigating life post-divorce, particularly the impact on her children. In a recent episode of her “Misspelling” podcast, Spelling revealed that since her separation from Dean McDermott in June 2023, her five children have joined her on a “roller coaster” of emotions and instability.
Financial uncertainties weigh heavily on Spelling’s mind, as her inconsistent Hollywood career has left her feeling like she’s “constantly letting them down.” She’s unable to provide the same level of financial stability she once did, leading to feelings of guilt.
“I’m constantly climbing that hill, and I’m almost there, and then something happens,” Spelling said, describing the emotional roller coaster she faces. “I know everyone can relate to this on different levels, but it’s like, ‘Okay. Here I am, made it again on my own’ — and boom, slipped back down that hill again.”
Despite the challenges, Spelling emphasizes that her love for her children remains unwavering. “The love’s there, but they’re on this roller-coaster with me, unfortunately,” she said.
Psychotherapist Dr. Hillary Goldsher noted that Spelling’s experience is common among those going through divorce, as the constant stress of the situation activates the “fight or flight” system. “Divorce is nothing short of a trauma,” she told Spelling.
Spelling’s eldest child, Stella, 16, has taken on additional responsibilities to help care for the family. “When I’m working and I’m gone all day, it falls a lot on my 16-year-old to really oversee the family,” Spelling said, expressing her guilt about the burden this places on her daughter.
Despite the hardships, Spelling remains committed to providing a loving and stable environment for her children, even if that means navigating the ups and downs of life together.
