John Lennon tragically died in 1980 after a crazed fan, Mark Chapman, shot him outside his NYC home
Sir Paul McCartney paid a touching tribute to his late friend and former Beatles bandmate John Lennon on what would have been Lennon’s 84th birthday.
Taking to Instagram, McCartney shared a poignant photo from a 2022 performance of his, where he was seen on stage with projected footage of Lennon playing guitar behind him. The footage was taken from Peter Jackson’s Disney+ documentary The Beatles: Get Back.
McCartney, 82, captioned the post, “Happy Birthday John. Thanks for being there.”

Lennon was shot and killed at the age of 40 outside his New York home by an obsessed fan, Mark Chapman.
Their relationship had been strained after Lennon left The Beatles in 1969, with tensions over legal battles and their shared music catalogue. However, by the mid-1970s, the two repaired their friendship, even spending time together at Lennon’s New York apartment.
McCartney recently opened up about this healing period on his McCartney: A Life in Lyrics podcast, saying, “It would have been the worst thing in the world had he just been killed and we still had a bad relationship. That would have been a big guilt trip for me.”
