Camila Cabello’s Cinderella ‘charisma’ got her role in ‘Rob Peace’

Camila Cabello ‘struck’ director Chiwetel Ejiofor for role in new move

Camila Cabello didn’t have to audition for her part in Rob Peace.

The singer turned actress chose to promote her new indie film Rob Peace, which made her Sundance Film Festival debut this year, on the wintry streets of Park City instead of the Grammy and VMA stages.

In the film, Cabello plays Rob Peace’s girlfriend. Rob Peace, played by Jay Will (the actor from Tulsa King), is a bright Yale student who was up in a violent New Jersey neighbourhood.

However, his promising future is ruined when he is made to sell narcotics in order to pay for his imprisoned father’s legal defence.

Based on the autobiography The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace by Jeff Hobbs, Peace’s college flatmate, it’s a horrifying true story.

Cabello, who became well-known with the girl group Fifth Harmony, didn’t have to try out for the role of Rob Peace.

Cabello was cast by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who wrote, directed, and plays the father of the main character who is unfairly imprisoned, after he saw her in Kay Cannon’s contemporary Cinderella.

“I was struck by her charisma,” Ejiofor said. “I knew you’d be perfect for the role. I was thrilled when you said you’d join us on this journey.”

Cabello joined, “I was thrilled when you asked.”

The singer said about her character, Naya, “I really related to her and her hustle for wanting to make the world better.”

Regarding her nascent film career, Cabello is amenable to any screenplay that comes her way.

“For me, it’s really whatever makes me feel something,” she said. “It’s not that thought out for me. It’s whatever feels new or challenging, or what I haven’t done before.”
